DigiTimes: HTC and Facebook to develop a “customized smartphone,” Samsung launching the next Google Nexus

A couple wild rumours coming from overseas this morning. One about the next Nexus device and the other about HTC and Facebook.

Let’s begin with that source of the report/rumours are from Digitimes, a Chinese publication who usually gives vague insider information from supply chain manufacturers. OK, remember the Facebook phone? This was supposed to be launched last year and was supposed to be partnership with HTC. It really never panned out, but what did surface were a few HTC Android devices that had with a dedicated Facebook button. The devices were named the HTC Salsa and the HTC ChaCha, or also known as the Status (TELUS).

The new rumours are that a “Facebook phone” is in the works, yet again teaming up with HTC. Digitimes sources say that the two companies will produce a “customized smartphone” with “a platform exclusive to Facebook to enable and integrate all functions available on the social networking site.” This is expected to be launch “in the third quarter of 2012 at the earliest.”

Next up, Google Nexus. We’ve seen the Nexus One (produced by HTC), The Nexus S (produced by Samsung), and the Galaxy Nexus (another Samsung production). Google usually releases one Nexus per year and it’s been rumoured that they’ll possibly hit up LG or maybe even Sony for the 4th iteration of the “pure Android.” However, another wild rumour coming out of Digitimes.

According to their sources it’s Samsung that’s going back in for a triple. The same report reads, “Since Samsung has become the top vendor of Android smartphones, Google will continue to have Samsung develop its next-generation Nexus models, leveraging Samsung’s innovation ability with regard to the Android platform, and its ability to control the supply of key components.”

What do you think of these two rumours? Anyone interested in a customized “Facebook phone” or another Samsung Nexus?
