Nokia might drop PureView branding from future smartphones

“We want to make the picture equal a million words! It is not just a picture, it is your memory.”

Those are the words of Samuli Hänninen, VP of software program management for Nokia’s Smart Devices business. Microsoft’s $7.2 billion proposed deal for Nokia’s Devices & Services is a joint effort that will take both companies towards the “next chapter.” Hänninen was interviewed by Nokia on their company blog about the direction of imaging within its phones – mainly because this was a big focus for Nokia in their latest smartphones, specifically on the Lumia 920 and 1020 Pureview.

“The most important thing is what we do, not what it is called, although we like PureView a lot.”

Hänninen stated “Our vision is to change the way people capture memories. Together with Microsoft, we will be even better equipped to do so… For people who build products, the most important things are the ability (to do your job), and having the resources you need to do it. With combined resources and talent from Nokia and Microsoft, we’re excited about the cool things we will be able to build together in future… Now we are looking forward to what we can achieve when we will be part of Microsoft and can be truly open.” Sounds promising for the future of the imaging capabilities as Nokia offers one of the leading camera experiences on mobile.

However, the PureView branding might get axed, which is not the biggest deal as it’s really about the user experience and features people want. Hänninen said “PureView stands for the best imaging experiences on our devices and we will continue to innovate in this area. The Nokia Lumia 720 was a great example of us bringing a stunning camera to market with our widest aperture to date, but it didn’t carry the PureView name. The most important thing is what we do, not what it is called, although we like PureView a lot.”

The Nokia Lumia 1020 will be coming to Canada in October on Rogers and TELUS.
