Google replacing Dalvik runtime with ART in next Android version

We’re likely going to get a preview of the latest Android version at Google I/O next week, and while we don’t know exactly what Mountain View is cooking up, we do know at least one important change: the long-running and increasingly antiquated Dalvik Runtime is being replaced by ART, or Android Runtime, which arrived in experimental form with KitKat.

Two merged changes to AOSP, the Android Open Source Project, confirmed the change and, increasingly, developers have been optimizing their apps for the new code.

According to Google, ART “introduces ahead-of-time (AOT) compilation, which can improve app performance. ART also has tighter install-time verification than Dalvik.” In other words, future versions of Android with ART enabled should run the today’s apps even faster and with fewer crashes.
