Andy Rubin has departed Google to start a technology incubator

Andy Rubin — who is the father of Google’s Android OS — has been out of the spotlight since Sundar Pichai took over his role back in March 2013. Rubin did stay on with Google as head of robotics division. According to the Wall Street Journal, Rubin is departing Google to start an incubator that will focus on building technology-hardware products.

Google confirmed the report and CEO Larry Page stated, “I want to wish Andy all the best with what’s next. With Android he created something truly remarkable with a billion plus happy users. Thank you.” Rubin joined the company when he sold Android, Inc. to Google in 2005.

Page recently expanded Pichai’s role beyond Chrome and Android to lead all “core Google products,” including “research, search, maps, Google+, commerce and ads and infrastructure.”
