Angry Birds 2 officially lands on July 30th

Angry Birds 2

Parents, you should mark July 30th on your calendar, because Angry Birds 2, the sequel to the original Angry Birds, is coming out that day.

“With 3 billion game downloads, millions of fans across the globe, multiple mashups and spin-offs, collaborations with A-list celebrities and much more, we’re really proud that Angry Birds is the mother of all mobile game apps. And now we’re proud to announce the mother of all sequels – Angry Birds 2!” says developer Rovio on its website.

Beyond a release date and a promise that Angry Birds 2 will “flock into app stores worldwide,” details on the game are sparse. There’s no mention of new gameplay mechanics or whether the game will feature new varieties of birds to fling at those pesky pigs.

What is clear is that Rovio needs the game to be a hit. Following the massive success of the original, the company has seen its fortunes take a dramatic turn for the worse. Just last year the company announced, among other things, a CEO change, employee layoffs and a 73 per cent decrease in profits. The world of mobile gaming has changed significantly since the original Angry Birds came out, and it seems unlikely Rovio will catch lighting in the bottle twice.
