Samsung officially announces the Galaxy Tab S2

After numerous leaks, Samsung has quietly announced the Galaxy Tab S2. Following up from last year, the Tab S2 will be available in two sizes, 8.0-inch and 9.7-inch displays, offering the same screen resolutions of 2048×1536 pixels.

JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Division at Samsung, stated in a release, “The Galaxy Tab S2 is not only our thinnest and lightest tablet of its size ever, it also gives users quick, easy access to a wealth of superior viewing and productivity features. We believe the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is the most complete personal visual device designed for consumers to carry and use anywhere.”

Each Tab S2 is only 5.6 mm thick and features similar metal frame design lines to Samsung’s latest smartphones. Both tablets run Android 5.0 Lollipop with TouchWiz, and feature a fingerprint sensor embedded within the home button.

Powered by octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM, the Tab S2 comes with either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage (as well as 100 GB of Microsoft OneDrive storage), an 8MP rear camera and a 2.1MP front-facing camera, and overall weight of 265g (8.0-inch) and 389g (9.7-inch). As for battery life, Samsung noted that the Tab S2 has a 4,000mAh battery for the 8-inch and the 9.7-inch model packs in a 5,870mAh battery.

As for availability, Samsung notes that the Tab S2 will come in WiFi-only and WiFi+LTE versions “in global markets, starting from August.” Pricing has yet to be announced.

While it’s not listed, Best Buy Canada has already started to list cases for the new tablet on its site. The Tab S2 Cover Case will retail for $80 in Canada.
