Ontario Police are looking to fine you this weekend for texting while driving

Fresh off an increase in fines levied to those caught driving while distracted, the Ontario Provincial Police has announced it will be hitting the road this weekend looking for people behind the wheel using their handheld device.

The OPP said in a statement that there have already been 41 deaths this year from distracted driving. The fines for distracted driving — which includes holding a mobile device — increased on September 1st to a minimum of $490 and three demerit points.

The OPP noted that it encourages anyone considering picking up their device while driving to “End your summer safely. Don’t drive distracted. It could kill you or someone you love. Drive responsibly and respect the lives of everyone on Ontario roads.”
