Android leads app download numbers in emerging markets, iOS grabs top revenue spot

Data pulled from App Annie, an enterprise app market data collector, indicates that Android is now leading in terms of the number of app downloads in emerging markets, but that iOS continues to hold the top spot when it comes to overall revenue.

According to the recently released data, downloads sourced from India and Southeast Asia saw Android jumping from 85 percent in Q2 2015 to 90 percent in Q3 2015. On the iOS side of the spectrum, Apple’s app ecosystem experienced a revenue increase from 70 percent last quarter to 80 percent this quarter.

What’s perhaps most interesting about this data is that iOS continues to lead the revenue side of things despite Apple taking a 30 percent cut of every transaction facilitated through the company’s popular mobile App Store.

“iOS and Google Play continued to show diverging growth patterns in Q3 2015. Google Play expanded its download lead over iOS thanks to first-time smartphone users in emerging markets like India and Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, iOS extended its revenue lead over Google Play thanks to its continued strength in another Asian market: China,” says an excerpt from the study.

Earlier this year data predicted that app revenue for both Google and Apple would double over the course of four years and both companies, at least according to App Annie, seem to be well on their way to this goal, especially in the competitive emerging market space.
