Telegram has 100-million active monthly users

Telegram, the popular chat app that allows users to encrypt their messages, today announced that it has more than 100-million active monthly users.

More than 350,000 users sign up to use the service each day. Those same users, both new and old, use Telegram to send some 15-billion messages daily, says the company.

The milestone is impressive, especially considering some of the challenges Telegram has faced over the past year. In November, Facebook-owned WhatsApp updated its app to block outbound links to Telegram.

In the same month, Telegram came under scrutiny following the Paris terror attacks. In the aftermath of the incident, ISIL began directing its supporters to Telegram because of the app’s support for end-to-end encryption and secret channels.
