In not a so surprising move, Google has renamed its Chromecast technology. Moving forward, the streaming method will be known as Google Cast.
As Android Police notes, Chromecast has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a way to mirror Chrome browser tabs on a TV. The underlying Cast technology Google originally built with Chrome now powers a variety of products and apps — including the Chromecast and Chromecast Audio dongles, which will retain their current names for the time being. All of that to say it makes a lot of sense for Google to rename the technology to something more inclusive.
Later this week, Google will update the Chromecast apps on both Android and iOS to reflect the name change. In the meantime, the company has already launched a new Google Cast website.
