Tim Hortons just gave hockey trading cards a modern makeover. Starting today, Canadians can download the company’s new augmented reality app, in which you can scan cards with your mobile device to open a 3D version of the player pictured. This marks the first time any such advanced functionality has been woven into an NHL trading card experience.
The iOS and Android app, which were created by Toronto-based AR and VR studio Seed Interactive, recognizes all 100 of the 2016-17 cards. In addition to seeing miniature 3D models of their hockey heroes skating around in the real world, users can also find hidden animations by scanning different card combinations side by side.
“Hockey cards are an integral part of the rich history of the game. They’re coveted memorabilia, informative guides, and an eternal snapshot of a hockey moment in time,” said NHL chief marketing officer and executive vice-president of marketing Brian Jennings in a press release.
“This collection of Tim Hortons Collector’s Series NHL Trading Cards will allow hockey fans – across generations – to connect with the current era of elite NHL players.”
The physical trading cards, created by UpperDeck, are available in packs of three at Tim Hortons locations for $1 before tax with a beverage, or $1.99 alone.
As it has in years past, the trading card experience will also have a home online. Each pack has a pin that hockey fans can use to retrieve digital copies of their cards at collecttowin.ca. There they can trade cards with other collectors for a chance to win NHL-related prizes.
