Samsung teases new Exynos 9 series chipset

Samsung has started teasing its next-generation Exynos system-on-a-chip, the Exynos 9.

In a tweet sent out on Friday morning from the company’s official Exynos Twitter account, Samsung says, “Be ready for the #TheNextExynos.” An accompanying image notes the silicon is “coming soon.”

Samsung did not go on to provide any additional details on the unreleased SoC, but websites like SamMobile are speculating the company will manufacture the new chip using its 10nm FinFET fabrication process. This is the same fabrication method Qualcomm is licensing from Samsung to manufacture its new Snapdragon 835 processor.

While most reports have agreed the Galaxy S8 will ship with a Snapdragon 835 processor inside, it’s possible Samsung may, following its own precedent, also release a S8 model that instead includes a Exynos 9 chip.

In 2016, the company dual-sourced both the S7 and Note 7’s processors, leading to an interesting situation here in Canada.

S7 units shipped to Canada featured Samsung’s Exynos 8890 chip, while Note 7 units came equipped with Qualcomm’s 820 processor.

We’ll find out the S8’s processor situation next month when Samsung finally officially announces the smartphone.
