Canadian VOIP and IPTV provider VMedia is now offering its TV service to eight new cities and surrounding areas in Quebec.
With the expansion of its TV services in addition to its phone and internet offerings, VMedia becomes the only ‘triple play’ competitor to the Big Three Canadian operators in Quebec City, Gatineau, Sherbrooke, Trois Rivières, Shawinigan, Saguenay, Chicoutimi and Rimouski.
The expansion adds 500,000 Quebec houses to its potential reach, adding to its budding customer base in Montreal.
“After our successful launch in Montreal last year, we have been getting many requests for our service from the rest of Quebec,” said Andre Charette, the general manager of VMedia Quebec in a statement sent to MobileSyrup. “We are very happy to be able to respond to that demand, and expand our ability to provide a much-needed alternative for consumers to the big companies in triple-play TV, internet and phone services.”

VMedia provides its TV service through its ‘VBox’ Android-based set-top box and media player, which allows for access to “hundreds of apps” and provides a “look back” feature for TV, video on demand and PVR, and also through the VMedia app for Roku.
The TV service is only available for VMedia internet customers, and doesn’t require a contract. A triple play bundle in Quebec starts at $72.85 CAD ($54.90 for the first six months) for an ‘Unlimited Canada’ phone plan, unlimited usage Cable 15 internet and ‘Skinny’ basic TV.
VMedia’s Skinny basic package was recently the subject of a contentious Ontario court case between the four-year-old upstart and Bell Media, which centered on whether or not the fact that it was an internet-based service meant it was violating copyright by re-transmitting over-the-air signals.
Ultimately, the judge sided with Bell, disallowing its standalone Roku app, but VMedia continues to offer the 30-channel service when coupled with an internet plan.
